Over 200 Agitators Arrested For Violent Protest Before Adani Wilmar

Paradip: More than 200 retrenched labourers of Cargill India refinery plant were arrested on Thursday for allegedly staging a violent protest in front of Adani Wilmar Limited.

Tension prevailed in the area after a group of agitators were forcibly picked up by the cops from the spot. As a result, some of the protestors waylaid the police vehicle by lying on the street. Following this, the agitators were arrested by police.

The protestors continued their agitation for the second day demanding reinstatement after a discussion with district administration officials failed to yield any result yesterday.

Defying prohibitory orders clamped under Section 144 of CrPC by the Jagatsinghpur district administration, nearly 152 retrenched workers of Cargill India refinery plant accompanied by their family members are sitting on a dharna in front of the company’s gate demanding jobs at Adani Wilmar Limited which had bought Cargill India.

A total of five platoons of police force have been deployed at the spot to prevent any untoward incident.

Workers had also staged a similar protest before the plant in April this year after the company was shut down due to losses and later gheraoed Paradip police station over the same demand.

Apprehending tension, the district administration had also imposed restrictions under Section 144 near the plant premises.

However, the agitators had withdrawn their protest after getting assurance from police and company officials that their demands would be considered.
