Attack On Jr Doctors Paralyses Bengal Hospitals

Outdoor health services in all government hospitals in West Bengal were paralysed for the second day on Wednesday as protests broke out against the assault on two junior doctors at NRS Medical College and Hospital in Kolkata. The cease-work agitation by the medical fraternity is of a scale not seen in Bengal in recent past.

A 75-year-old patient dies of heart attack at NRS Medical College and Hospital around 5.30 pm on Monday. The patient’s family alleges negligence. A mob comprising the deceased’s relatives and neighbours assault on-duty doctors.

Two doctors suffer grievous injuries and admitted to ICU. One doctor suffers a “depressed fracture” on the head and undergoes surgery. His condition is critical. Another suffers fractures on ribs and spine.

NRS shut from Tuesday morning. Soon other medical colleges in Kolkata join agitation. All medical colleges in Bengal join strike by Tuesday night.
