Chidambaram The Accused Spends Night At CBI Building He Opened As Minister

New Delhi: Hours after the dramatic arrest of former Union Minister P Chidambaram on Wednesday evening, the senior Congress leader spent an almost sleepless night inside a room of a guest house at the CBI headquarters here, officials said on Thursday.

The 73-year-old leader was kept in the suite 5 of the guest house, news agency PTI quoted the unnamed CBI officials as saying. It is normal for the agency to keep high security arrested accused in the guest house to ensure proper security and monitoring, they added.

Ironically, Chidambaram was detained as an accused in the same CBI building that he had inaugurated in 2011 when he was the Union Home Minister.

Officials said he was not questioned on Wednesday night after he was brought to the building. The interrogation started around 10 am on Thursday, after he was allowed home-cooked food and a change of clothes.

Chidambaram is being interrogated  over allegations that he facilitated foreign investment in a TV company, INX Media, in 2007, when he was the Union Finance Minister, at the instance of his son, Karti Chidambaram, who allegedly received kickbacks.
