Flood Threat Imminent In Three South Odisha Districts

 Koraput: Following the alarming rise in the water level in Kolab, Machhkund and Jalaput reservoirs, flood alert has been sounded for three South Odisha districts.

According to reports, due to torrential rain in the upper catchments, authorities of the Kolab and Machhkund reservoirs have opened the dam gates.The authorities opened five gates of Machhkund reservoir on Sunday afternoon as the water level went up to 2588 cubic feet against the against the danger level of 2790 cubic feet. Till reports last came, 8,600 cusecs of water per second was released from the reservoir.

In the Upper Kolab reservoir, the authorities have opened one gate to release the water. While the danger level of the reservoir is 858 metres, the water is flowing at 857 metres. The reservoir has 11 gates. We are closely monitoring the water level and will open more gates if the water level goes up,” the authorities said.

Besides, the water level in Jalaput reservoir has almost touched the danger mark. By 6 pm, the water level of the reservoir has been recorded at 2748 cubic feet against the danger level of 2750 cubic feet.

With the opening of the gates of Machhkund and Kolab reservoirs, the Koraput district administration has alerted the people in the riverside areas not to move closer to the river bank. Besides, collectors of Malkangiri and Nabarangpur districts have also been alerted.
