Shillong Unrest: Army Brought In To Tackle Situation

New Delhi: Shillong remained tense for the fifth day after fresh violence broke out last night, prompting the Centre to send about 1000 central paramilitary forces to tackle the situation. The unrest began last week when clashes broke out between residents of Punjabi line area in the city and Khasi drivers of state-run buses.

Curfew has been imposed in certain parts of the city, while internet services have been suspended in the Khasi area.

The unrest began last week when a tribal bus conductor was allegedly assaulted by some residents of Punjabi lane area. Fresh reports of violence were reported on Sunday night, which forced the police to use tear gas to disperse the mob.

The Union Home Ministry is aware of the situation and is in constant touch with the State Government.
