The Indian Army on Thursday added electric cars to its official fleet in partnership with Energy Efficiency Services Ltd (EESL).

Lt Gen Gopal R flagged off the first lot of electric cars in Delhi.

The Army will be using 10 electric cars in the first batch as a pilot project and will then evaluate further. It plans to reduce air pollution in Delhi and also increase efficiency by using these vehicles.

The cars supplied are made by Mahindra and Tata.

Electric vehicles are a proven technology to help reduce carbon emissions. Currently, Mahindra, Hyundai and Tata have fully electric cars in India but none of them are sold throughout the country.

In the recent budget, the government announced sops for electric vehicles to reduce the cost and increase market penetration, while reducing pollution.
