CWG 2018: Jitu Rai Shoots Gold, Weightlifters Wrap Up Campaign With Silver

Gold Coast: As expected, shooter Jitu Rai shot gold in the 10m air pistol event and a Games record at day five of the Gold Coast Games on Monday. The young shooter 17-year-old Mehuli Ghosh grabbed a silver in the 10m air rifle, while her teammate Apurvi Chandela shot bronze.

India are now perched on the third spot with 10 gold, four silver and five bronze medals.

The mixed badminton and men’s table tennis also added to India’s gold tally after they defeated Malaysia and defending champions Nigeria respectively.

For the weightlifters, it was the end of a highly successful Commonwealth Games campaign, as Pardeep Singh (105kg) added a silver. With this, the weightlifters alone have secured five gold, two silver and two bronze medals.

In the track and field events, Muhammed Anas Yahiya advanced to the finals of men’s 400m and high jumper Tejaswin Shankar. In women’s 400m Hima Das qualified for the semifinals.

Gaurav Solanki (52kg) and Manish Kaushik (60kg) advanced to the quarterfinals in boxing after winning their last-16 stage bouts.

However, India failed to get a medal in 10,000m women’s final, where L Suriya ended 13th, despite recording a personal best of 32:23.56sec. Shot-putter Tejinder Singh was eighth in the final round.
